POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

The birth of a child marks the beginning of a new journey in the life of the parents, especially the mother. While the event is bound to bring joy and delight to the mother, it can sometimes be confusing to see the opposite happen. It is estimated that more than 40% new mothers experience baby blues, an emotional state characterized by worry, unhappiness, fatigue and self-doubt. Baby blues usually disappear after a few days or a week, but if the feeling is prolonged and lasts for more than two weeks, it can be a case of postpartum depression. Let’s not take it lightly and know more on remedies in Homoeopathy. Homoeopathic remedies are always less risky for Mothers on lactation and thereby for their new born babies.

WHAT IS POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION?

Postpartum depression is the state of depression which may start during pregnancy or up to a year from the birth of the child. Depression is a mental illness which negatively affects the way you feel, think or act. It is hard to tell the difference between postpartum depression and the usual stress and exhaustion that is experienced due to new parenthood. It is not unusual to experience feelings of exhaustion, sadness or despair during or after pregnancy, but if the feelings prevent you from doing your daily tasks, then it could be an indication of postpartum depression. Homoeopathic medicines are very effective when it comes to control our mental state.

IS IT THERE AROUND US?

Let us go through a case of a lady, counselled by a famous Psychologist and accompanied by homoeopathy medicines.

A patient walked into the clinic gloomy, weak and careless about her appearance. On taking history, the lady was on the verge of divorce…She was leading a happy married life, when all the troubles began after the birth of her child.

The girl was 1st born in the family, introverted. She was academically very brilliant, but practically she was very much of a dependent type. Every decision was taken by mother in her childhood. She had 2 sisters younger to her who were much more active. The girl was very silent from her childhood itself.

After marriage, girl came abroad away from her family. Husband was a very short tempered person, who shouts on small things. Though she was a little worried, life was normal.

After delivery of their baby, the girl showed a lot of changes in her behavior. The girl sleeps all day, without showing any interest in taking care of the baby and herself. She doesn’t even bath, not even comb hair. Baby developed eczema without being bathed or changed dress properly.

Husband shouts on seeing all this, due to which she does things mechanically. The girl became more of an introverted type and frightened. When at times, the girl behaved very normal when they go for an outing. Girl talks a lot at that time, seems very happy as well.

Counselling sessions were done…Girl was explained about postpartum depression. She read a lot about this. Homoeopathic medicines were also administered in between for her to balance her emotional troubles., which helped her to overcome her negative thoughts and withdrawal from surroundings. The medicines which were used were:

1. Lycopodium – Homeopathic Medicine for Boosting Self Confidence in Persons who avoid undertaking new tasks. Lycopodium is an important homeopathic medicine for lack of self-confidence. It is used for individuals who are averse to taking on new tasks. They fear failure and don’t like to face new situations. Lycopodium is also used when there is an aversion to take on responsibilities because of the fear of failure. Lycopodium also works well when a person has been dominated by parents during childhood.

2. Silicea – Homeopathic Medicine for lack of self confidence levels in Persons who are timid and suffer from Low Confidence. It works well for raising the self confidence levels in individuals who are very timid and lack self-confidence. They are uncomfortable appearing in public and lack the courage to speak in front of a group of people. They are unable to express themselves properly and have a very mild, sensitive, nervous and yielding nature. Such people consider themselves incapable of doing any work because of the fear of failure.

3. Kali Phosphoricum: This is used to treat symptoms of emotional stress, lack of concentration and fatigue resulting from depression.

The girl later on improved a lot and is now working in her hometown.

Counseling sessions and homoeopathic medicines helped her to come back to normal. When it comes to dealing with problems related to our Mental health a lot of care must be shown from the people related to the patient. Consult a Psychologist and getting further reference for Medical treatment, that can save your dear ones. Post-partum Depression is just a disease as any other physical one.
